Deadline: Till the position is filled.

A postdoctoral research position is available in Dr. Katherine Yanhang Zhang’s Multi-Scale Tissue Biomechanics Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Boston University. We are looking for a self-motivated researcher to work on projects on multi-scale measurements and computational modeling of extracellular matrix (ECM) mechanics in vascular remodeling. The selected candidate will work on understanding the important role of local tissue mechanical properties and microstructures of the arterial wall in in the initiation and progression of aortic dissection (AD), a devastating cardiovascular disease known for its rapid propagation and high morbidity and mortality. Large elastic arteries consist of concentric layers of elastic lamellae with inhomogeneously distributed elastic and collagen ECM fibers. Our recent studies provide strong evidence that ECM inhomogeneity is physiologically important. We will use state-of-the-art quantitative ECM imaging, noninvasive local mechanical property mapping, discrete-finite element modelling, and tissue testing approaches to understand the evolvement of inhomogeneity in local mechanical properties and ECM microstructure, both along and across the arterial wall, in triggering AD.

Applicants with in-depth knowledge in biomechanical characterization, ECM structure imaging, solid mechanics, and finite element modeling are welcome to apply. PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant fields is required. Research experience in soft tissue biomechanics is not required but is preferred.

Interested candidates should contact Dr. Katherine Yanhang Zhang at yanhang@bu.edu. Applications will be reviewed immediately and will continue until a suitable candidate is hired. Salary level is consistent with NIH guidelines. Please include in the email: a cover letter, CV, names and contact information of three references, and one or two publications showing the candidate’s previous research experience.
