The Department of Social Sciences of the University of Basel invites applications for a Postdoctoral researcher (75%, 31.5h/week) to work with Denise Traber as part of the research project “Class identity politics” for a duration of 3 years. The starting date of the position is 1 September 2023, or later. Salary is standardized based on University of Basel guidelines (appr. 62’000 CHF/year).
The project “Class identity politics: the (new) political role of social class in Western Europe” (funded by Swiss National Science Foundation), investigates determinants and consequences of class identities in Western Europe. It seeks to answer the following questions: How salient are social class identities in Western Europe and what determines their salience? Does inequality lead to more conflict between social classes? What is the role of political actors in shaping social class identities? How important are social class identities for political decision-making?

The project consists of three work packages: a large-scale survey, an analysis of parliamentary speeches with automated text analysis, and two survey experiments.

Your position

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the implementation (together with Denise Traber) of a comparative survey in five European countries (France, Germany, United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland), and to collaborate with the other project members, contributing to the research output across the project’s three work packages. Further responsibilities are helping to organize events – such as workshops and conference panels – to disseminate the research findings.

Your profile

  • Completed PhD in Political Science or related discipline
  • Demonstrated capacity for producing excellent research (e.g. internationally visible publications, manuscripts under revise and resubmit, high-potential working papers)
  • Solid expertise in quantitative methods, including experimental methods
  • Experience with coding and data management in R and/or Python
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in English. Knowledge of German is a plus
