Researcher in sociolinguistics and gender studies (M/F)

Tasks

As part of the ERC Starting Grant project “Formal Models of Social Meaning and Identity Construction through Language” (SMIC), we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in sociolinguistics and gender studies to work in axis 3 of the project : “From Social Meaning to Persona Construction”. This axis focuses on the comparative analysis of a corpus of sociolinguistic interviews with feminist and LGBT activists in Paris, Marseille and Montreal (the corpus Linguistic cartographies of feminism (CaFé)).

Activities

– Qualitative and quantitative analyzes of variable linguistic phenomena.
– Qualitative discourse analyzes on language and gender in the (non)militant context.
– Writing of scientific articles and scientific communications on the themes of the project.
– Design of a website promoting the CaFé corpus.
– Participation in the organization of study day(s) / conferences related to the project

SKILLS

– Thesis in sociolinguistics and/or gender studies.
– Dossier of publications in sociolinguistics and gender studies.
– Experience in quantitative analyzes of linguistic variation and/or qualitative analyzes of discourse. The ideal candidate would have experience in both.

Work context

The Formal Linguistics Laboratory studies all aspects of language, from words to discourse and dialogue, from acoustic signals to interpretation. Its members develop a formal approach to this particular cognitive system that is language, and decline their research using methods and objectives relating to theoretical linguistics, experimental linguistics, computational linguistics, field linguistics and of the typology. Driven by an open and collaborative spirit, the Formal Linguistics Laboratory is a member of the Labex EFL – Empirical Foundations of Linguistics, and participates in numerous national and international collaborations.

The SMIC project focuses on the construction of formal models of sociolinguistic variation, social meaning and the construction of identity through language. The recruited person will work in an interdisciplinary team of approximately 4 young researchers.
