Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover

Deadline: July 31, 2023

The Institut of Quantum Optics invites applications for four positions of a Research Assistant (m/f/d) in the field of Experimental Physics (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 75 %) starting as soon as possible. The positions are initially limited to 3 years each and offer the possibility of receiving a doctorate.

Responsibilites and duties

1)               Matter-wave Interferometry in Microgravity (PI: Prof. Ernst M. Rasel)
Space is a unique environment for experiments with and applications of ultracold quantum gases. Worldwide unique features of the Drop Tower Bremen are free-fall times of a duration otherwise sought in space experiments. In the QUANTUS collaboration funded by DLR, unique apparatus and methods have been realized, that allow experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates to be performed on previously unattainable time scales. The research focuses on achieving ultra-long expansion times in free fall and performing matter wave interferometry in catapult mode. This work is of enormous importance for even more ambitious space experiments aboard the International Space Station or satellites. The successful candidate will work on the operation of the second generation drop tower experiment QUANTUS-2, prepare and perform campaigns in the drop tower on atom interferometry as well as analyze data obtained with Bose-Einstein condensates in microgravity.

2)               Quantum Gravimetry using Bose-Einstein condensates (PI: Prof. Ernst M. Rasel)
Similar to lasers in optics, Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) are very promising for atom interferometry. Important methods for BEC interferometry have been developed in our group, promising a uniquely high accuracy for acceleration measurements. In particular, we succeeded in developing a transportable quantum gravimeter for measuring Earth’s gravity. As part of the scientific activities, measurement campaigns will be carried out in cooperation with the Institute of Geodesy at LUH at geodetically relevant locations. New methods and the physics of interferometry will be investigated, e.g. the impact of atomic collisions and of blackbody radiation on the atomic interferences.

3)               Theory of Quantum Sensing (PI: Dr. Naceur Gaaloul)
Theoretical investigations in the field of atom interferometry should be carried out in the “Theory of Quantum Sensing” group of Dr. Naceur Gaaloul. The aim is to design phase-sensitive interferometry schemes relevant for fundamental Physics (General Relativity tests, Dark Matter/Dark energy searches) and its applications (Inertial Navigation, Earth Observation, Quantum Sensing in Space). Novel sensor geometries combining Bragg, Raman or Bloch pulses shall be simulated and their immunity to realistic environmental perturbations will be studied.

4)               Absolute Quantum Gravimetry in Flight (PI: Dr. Dennis Schlippert)
The successful candidate will independently work on the realization of a quantum gravimeter for operation on aircraft in the frame of the “Leuchtturmprojekts AeroQGrav – Absolute Aero Quantengravimetrie”. Work will be conducted in close collaboration with project partners at DLR-SI and geo++ GmbH and is particularly focused on the conception and setup of sensor periphery and integration of auxiliary sensors, mainly for suppressing the influence of vibrational noise. Furthermore, the candidate will be involved in the commissioning and testing of the sensor including flight campaigns.

Employment conditions

To qualify for the position, applicants must hold a scientific university degree (Master, Diploma, or equivalent) in physics, photonics, quantum engineering, or comparable curricula. Very good knowledge of quantum optics and atomic and molecular physics is beneficial. We require very good written and spoken English, organizational skills, own initiative, and the ability and willingness to familiarize oneself with new areas of work.

What we offer

Our research is closely embedded in numerous international and national collaborations, including the Collaborative Research Centers TerraQ and DQ-mat, the Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers, and close cooperation with DLR-SI. Through our collaboration with the QUEST Leibniz Research School and the Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers, we offer outstanding development opportunities, actively support scientific staff on their way to a doctorate, and support them when research challenges arise. In our friendly and international working environment, you will take on projects independently and benefit from a top-class international network. Our integrated graduate school offers a wide range of continuing education opportunities in our interdisciplinary research field as well as training in soft skills to successfully prepare you for your career.

The university aims to promote equality between women and men. For this purpose, the university strives to reduce under-representation in areas where a certain gender is under-represented. Women are under-represented in the salary scale of the advertised position. Therefore, qualified women are encouraged to apply. Moreover, we welcome applications from qualified men. Preference will be given to equally-qualified applicants with disabilities.

Please submit your application including

  • Letter of motivation incl. brief summary of your research interests & previous experience (max. 2 pages),
