University of Twente
Deadline: November 5, 2023
Are you ready to make a significant impact on the energy transition and contribute to a more sustainable future? Look no further!
The MSCA Doctoral Network EarthSafe is excited to announce 10 PhD positions that will empower you to lead transformative research in deep geothermal resources and critical minerals exploration for a sustainable future. Be a part of this cutting-edge initiative that aims to break ground in the way we integrate knowledge from classic scientific disciplines (geoscience, mathematics, engineering, computer science, social science) in Earth and planetary sciences, offering novel multidisciplinary approaches with world changing impact.
ABOUT EARTHSAFE:
EarthSafe is a prestigious Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network funded by the European Commission. It aims at accelerating the transition to green energy and low-carbon economies in Europe and beyond by creating transformational data-fusion platforms to inform and enhance global exploration frameworks for deep geothermal resources and critical minerals to support green technologies. EarthSafe will achieve this by harnessing i) the complementary strengths and resolutions of multiple satellite and land-acquired geodatasets, ii) a novel combination of Artificial Intelligence, probabilistic inverse theory and state-of-the-art computational modelling and iii) a new social innovation component to support the creation and adoption of socially-responsible and sustainable practices.
YOUR OPPORTUNITY:
As a PhD candidate within the EarthSafe network, you’ll be at the forefront of scientific innovation. Here’s what you can expect:
Interdisciplinary Excellence: Collaborate with leading experts in fields ranging from satellite data analysis and computational modelling to machine learning and social sciences. EarthSafe’s diverse approach ensures that your research will have a multifaceted impact.
Cutting-Edge Research: Explore uncharted territories in deep geothermal resources and critical minerals through innovative combinations of satellite and land-acquired datasets. Our novel approach, fuelled by machine learning, numerical simulations and probabilistic inverse theory, will provide you with the tools to push the boundaries of planetary exploration.
Global Reach: Contribute to international efforts to address energy challenges by enhancing exploration strategies. Your research will have a real-world impact on sustainable energy and resource management for future generations.
Social Engagement: EarthSafe recognizes the importance of social perception and benefits in exploration and resource management programs. Your work will not only advance scientific knowledge but also consider its societal implications.
WHY EARTHSAFE?
Marie Sklodowska-Curie Excellence: Join a network that benefits from the prestigious Marie Sklodowska-Curie programme, providing you with unparalleled support for your research and personal development.
Collaborative Environment: Work alongside top researchers, fellow PhD candidates, industry partners and NGO’s in a dynamic and collaborative atmosphere. Exchange ideas, share expertise, and grow together.
Innovation Leadership: Be a pioneer in the energy transition journey. EarthSafe is your platform to innovate, discover, and shape the future of sustainable resource exploration.
Multi-disciplinary training: The core philosophy of EarthSafe is deeply multi-disciplinary and its research programme adopts a multi-method paradigm. At the most fundamental level, EarthSafe brings together the combined competencies of Physical Sciences, Earth Sciences and Social Sciences.
Future-ready program: You will receive excellent training in the foundations and innovative combinations of four of the most powerful and relevant scientific disciplines today, namely machine learning, Bayesian inverse theory, computer simulation and science communication. You will be attractive to multiple academic and private sectors, including leadership positions in non-academic organizations and policy making bodies.
