About the Project
The MSc by Research programme at the University of Aberdeen is for students interested in a research-intensive master’s degree. It is designed specifically to enhance your skills for a PhD or research career. You can find further information about our academic requirements and programme structure here.
Join Us in Exploring the Exciting World of Cell Biology and Biochemistry!
Project Overview:
Cell growth is a dynamically regulated process responding to various external cues such as nutrient availability, growth factor signals, and stresses. At the heart of this regulatory network lies the Target of Rapamycin Complex 1 (TORC1 or mTORC1), an evolutionarily conserved kinase complex responsible for fine-tuning numerous cellular events. The key question we seek to answer is: How do upstream signals get sensed and transmitted to TORC1? This project will delve deep into the TORC1 pathway, exploring both its temporal (kinetics) and spatial (subcellular locations) aspects.
Project Objectives:
- Utilize our cutting-edge spatial TORC1 activity reporter system (as established in Hatakeyama et al., 2019, Mol Cell) to elucidate where, at the subcellular level, TORC1 senses different signals.
- Investigate the activation kinetics of TORC1, which exhibits a dual-phase response (fast and slow) to nutrient signals (Hatakeyama, 2021, Biomolecules).
- Uncover distinct molecular mechanisms governing TORC1 regulation in both time and space.
Model Systems:
As a master’s student, you will have the flexibility to choose between working with mammalian cultured cells or budding yeast, depending on your research interests and career perspective.
Main Techniques:
Microscopy; Western blotting; Immunoprecipitation; Mass spectrometry; Cell culture; Genome editing
Research Environment:
When you join our team, you’ll benefit from:
- State-of-the-art research facilities equipped with cutting-edge technology.
- Close supervision and mentorship from our dedicated and enthusiastic group leader.
- Weekly joint lab meetings involving six research labs, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing.
- Monthly joint meetings at the institute-wide level, offering unparalleled networking opportunities and exposure to diverse biomedical research disciplines.
We are a forward-thinking research group at the forefront of TORC1 research. Your research will contribute to our collective understanding of fundamental cellular processes. We offer a supportive and collaborative research environment where your ideas and contributions are valued.
