Under a changing climate, new approaches to develop growth and yield models using a time series of 3D remote sensing observations (specifically Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) or LiDAR) and information on climate are needed. By developing next generation growth and yield models that incorporate ALS information as well as modify growth due to climate sensitivity, forest managers will be able to better estimate future growth and yield and plan sustainable forest management actions into the future.
We are seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. student who will develop these next generation growth and yield models focused on utilising both remote sensing and climate information. The student will utilise forest measurements and repeat ALS measurements in Ontario and British Columbia. Analyses will involve first modifying existing growth and yield approaches to incorporate ALS derived site quality information, then examining the addition of a climate-sensitive component into the modeling approach. Research components include ALS data processing, climate analysis, modification of existing growth modelling approaches, and development of new approaches tailored to these Canadian forest systems.
This student will benefit from a strong collaboration between UBC, the Canadian Forest Service, and the British Columbia Ministry of Forests.
Eligible Candidates:
Canadian and international students are encouraged to apply, however preference will be given to Canadian students. The applicant should have successfully completed an M.Sc. and have a strong, demonstrated background in biometrics and growth and yield modelling. Experience with programming or scripting is essential. Experience with remote sensing and ALS data processing is desirable, as is demonstration of publishing in the per-reviewed literature.
An annual Graduate Research Assistant Stipend will be available for 4 years. The current scholarship rate for Ph.D. student is approximately CDN $30,000/year including benefits. If the candidate does not have NSERC or similar funding they will be expected to be proactive in applying for awards if necessary.
