The Position
This is a key role for an early career academic to work in Antarctic paleoclimate research. The role will involve the development and interpretation of past climate records from Antarctic ice samples, including developing new climate records representative of the Denman Glacier region of East Antarctica.
The position is fully funded by the Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science (ACEAS), which is a major $25M Special Research Initiative of the Australian Research Council. The goal of ACEAS is to help the world prepare for climate risks emerging from East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean by integrating knowledge of the ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and ecosystems, and their interplay. ACEAS is a national-scale, University-led Special Research Initiative in Antarctic science focused on this goal. ACEAS is led by the University of Tasmania with a range of Australian and International Partners. The successful applicant will contribute to this national-scale research effort, and will benefit from the opportunities for collaboration and career development available through ACEAS.
The Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Fellow will be a member of the ANU Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES). RSES is Australia’s leading academic research institution for Earth and Marine Sciences, and ranked 11th in the world for Earth and Marine Sciences (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023).

The Person
To excel in this role you will have:
- A PhD (or awarding of a PhD within six months of appointment commencement) in climate science or a related area, with a track record of independent research as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.
- Experience in paleoclimate research is desirable, but not essential.
- Experience in laboratory analyses of paleoclimate samples (and in particular ice samples) is desirable, but not essential.
- Experience in scientific coding for analysis of climate/paleoclimate data is essential, including a demonstrated ability to work with large gridded and/or multiproxy datasets.
- Ability or willingness to assist in the supervision of students working on research projects.
- Ability to solve problems and work independently as part of a team, and to meet deadlines.
- Excellent oral and written English language skills are required, and an ability for effective science communication to a range of audiences is desirable.
Your ability to lead by example, coupled with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, will enable you to foster respectful and productive working relationships with staff, students and colleagues at all levels within RSES in line with the RSES Culture Statement.
