Postdoctoral Computational Biologist/Research Associate

We are seeking a Post-doctoral Computational Biologist to apply novel machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches to existing as well as newly generated multi-omics datasets.

PROJECT: Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) such as Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC) cause chronic, relapsing inflammation of the intestine. In the absence of a cure, patients suffer a lifetime of debilitating symptoms. This project aims to develop and apply novel computational methods to existing and newly generated molecular multimodal datasets derived from primary human tissue samples as well as patient-derived intestinal organoids. As part of a large multi-disciplinary team the candidate will develop molecular disease classifiers and clinical biomarkers as well as identify novel treatment targets. The latter will then be tested on our patient-derived organoid models to identify the most promising candidates for further development into novel treatments.

CANDIDATE: Applicants should have completed a PhD in a relevant subject for example applied mathematics, computer science, genetics, or molecular biology. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in, and exceptional enthusiasm for, computational biology and machine learning, as well as a strong interest in the underlying biological/disease processes and a passion for data driven science. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual capable of thinking and working independently, and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

ENVIRONMENT: The post-holder will join a diverse, supportive, and friendly team of scientists, clinicians, and other professionals based at the Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (CSCI) and the Department of Paediatrics, University of Cambridge. This project is a close collaboration between the groups of Dr Matthias Zilbauer (CSCI) and Dr Namshik Han (Milner Therapeutics Institute (MTI)). The post-holder will therefore be part of the MTI computational research group led by Dr Namshik Han. The CSCI and the MTI are both located in the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre, based at the heart of the Cambridge Biomedical Research Campus providing access to state-of-the-art research facilities.

FUNDING: Funding is available for 3 years in the first instance. The successful candidate will be encouraged and supported to obtain external personal fellowship and grant support.
