Project Overview:

Cell growth is a dynamically regulated process responding to various external cues such as nutrient availability, growth factor signals, and stresses. At the heart of this regulatory network lies the Target of Rapamycin Complex 1 (TORC1 or mTORC1), an evolutionarily conserved kinase complex responsible for fine-tuning numerous cellular events. The key question we seek to answer is: How do upstream signals get sensed and transmitted to TORC1? This project will delve deep into the TORC1 pathway, exploring both its temporal (kinetics) and spatial (subcellular locations) aspects.

Project Objectives:

  • Utilize our cutting-edge spatial TORC1 activity reporter system (as established in Hatakeyama et al., 2019, Mol Cell) to elucidate where, at the subcellular level, TORC1 senses different signals.
  • Investigate the activation kinetics of TORC1, which exhibits a dual-phase response (fast and slow) to nutrient signals (Hatakeyama, 2021, Biomolecules).
  • Uncover distinct molecular mechanisms governing TORC1 regulation in both time and space.

Model Systems:

As a master’s student, you will have the flexibility to choose between working with mammalian cultured cells or budding yeast, depending on your research interests and career perspective.

Funding Notes

This is a self-funding project open to students worldwide, with an expected start date of February 2024.
Fees for this programme are £4,712 for home/UK students, and £24,860 for international students.
Additional research costs / Bench fees of £3,000 will also apply.
The Scottish Government offers postgraduate loans to those due to start a Masters (taught or research) programme.
