6PhD Position in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Materials or Related Fields

University of Manchester

Deadline: See the details

We’re always interested in hearing from motivated candidates with a background in synthetic organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, materials or related fields. All our projects are multi-disciplinary, offering excellent opportunities to work with National/International collaborators and world-class facilities.
Specific projects will be listed here when they are available.

Speculative enquires are welcome, email Prof. Matthew Gibson directly if you have any questions: matt.gibson@manchester.ac.uk

Fully Funded PhD places [Nationality limits. Non-UK applicants *might* not be eligible for full funding]. Self-funded students should contact MIG.

PhD 1. High Throughput Nanoparticle platform to democratise glycan analysis

BBSRC CDT. This project will develop strategies for high-through glycan-analysis using nanoparticle libraries. You will use modern polymer and nanoparticle chemistry as part of our programme to deploy nanobiosensors for glycobiology.

PhD 2. Degradable and resorbable polymeric cryoprotectants

This project will use modern polymer chemistry to obtain degradable polymers, which are resorbable in the environment or in human bodies to mitigate ice damage

PhD 3. Biomaterials to decipher glycosylation on ambiguous protein biomarkers

This project will develop new nanomaterials capable of ‘reading’ the glycans (sugars) on proteins, enabling new diagnostics and fundmental understanding. This will advance current diagnostics which only see the protein component, limiting their use and accuracy.

PhD 4. Cryobiology. Information coming soon.

PhD 5. Peptide/Polymer hybrid materials for nice nucleation

PhD 6. Cryopreservation of Cell Models to Reduce Animal Testing
