Stanford University

Deadline: February 15, 2024

We seek a Postdoctoral Fellow to join our project on developing human-AI interaction systems to support deliberate practice for socially important topics.

The team aims to use large language models to understand contentious topics and to support civil discourse engagement through human-AI collaboration.  It has the potential to promote informed and productive discussions between individuals as well as the development of scientific innovations in LLM-based applications.

The primary focus will be AI and digital platform functions/ structures. In particular, the flow of information and social connections via increasingly ubiquitous digital media channels is critical to the well-being of society, the health of democracy, and the pace of progress. Social and technical systems that amplify the spread of truth, insight, and cooperation will advance these goals, while those that amplify misinformation, confusion, exploitation, and polarization will damage them.

By employing an experimental and iterative approach, this postdoctoral fellow will help us to explore and test new tools, strategies, privacy paradigms, business models, and social media content moderation systems, with a particular focus on LLMs.

This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to research in the interaction of natural language processing and social computing.  The postdoctoral fellow will be co-supervised by Professor Alex ‘Sandy’ Pentland from MIT Media Lab, Professor Diyi Yang from Stanford NLP Group, and Professor Erik Brynjolfsson from the Stanford Digital Economy Lab at Stanford HAI.

Qualifications for this position include a PhD in computer science, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, human-computer interaction, or a closely related field. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in large language models (LLMs), machine learning, and conducting user studies, as well as strong interdisciplinary teamwork skills and communication skills.

Salary
$82,000-$85,000 annually for a period of two years

Application deadline
