Research Associate in Polymer Membranes

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a research associate to develop polymer membranes for energy conversion and storage. The project is funded by the European Research Council Starting Grant. This project will be carried out within the Functional Membranes and Energy Materials Group (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/song-group).

You will be expected to develop polymer membranes for redox flow batteries for energy storage. The detailed research work will include synthesis and characterisation of novel ion-conducting polymers, fabrication of polymers into ion-selective membranes, integrating the membranes with redox flow battery chemistries and studying the electrochemical energy storage performance.

You should have a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or another related area and a strong foundation in functional polymer synthesis.

Experience in membrane fabrication and characterisation is essential; experience in redox flow batteries is highly-desired. You should also be able to demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work on interdisciplinary projects and collaborate with partners.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 – £41,388 per annum.

The post is available from 1 October 2023 for 12 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension. The post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus).
